Aetna Health Insurance Company of PA

Based out of Hartford, CT, Aetna has a wide variety of plans for Pennsylvania residents looking for health insurance. Like most health insurance companies, Aetna offers basic HMO and PPO plans. HMO plan require the insured to stay within their network for doctors and they also require referrals. Because of this they can keep your premiums quite low although some critics of HMO’s are leery of being forced to stay within the HMO’s network for all medical services. PPO’s are much more flexible in that they allow you to choose any Doctor you like and also and do not require referrals (with a PPO you will save money if you choose a Physician or medical facility that is in network but you can still choose to go anywhere – unlike an HMO).

In addition to these basic options, Aetna offers consumer directed health plans (called Pennsylvania Health Savings Accounts or HSA’s). These health plans allow you to save for your own health insurance in a tax free health savings account. Aetna also offers seniors health plans that can work in conjunction with Medicare or replace it entirely.

Small group plans, for those employers with 2-50 employees and large companies with 50+ employees are also available. A.M. Best and Standard and Poors, leading financial rating companies, have given Aetna ratings of A and A+, respectively.

American Medical Security of PA

American Medical Security Life Insurance Company is a merger between American Medical Security Inc. and Wisconsin Life Insurance Company. It services are only available to those within the Taxpayers Network Inc. AMS offers many different Pennsylvania health insurance plan options like short tern options of 30-180 days and MedOne Plus, a flexible plan that allows you to select your benefits and choose co-payment and deductible levels. Self directed Health Plans and Health Savings Plans are also other plans available for PA residents.

Assurant Health of PA

Formally Fortis Health Insurance, Assurant has grown to offer many different Pennsylvania health insurance options. In addition to basic HMO, PPO and HSA plans there are options like the Healthy Lifestyle plan for those who rarely visit the doctors, but still want routine physicals. Other plans offered by Assurant include small group insurance, short term insurance and student insurance. A.M Best has given Assurant an A- rating for financial security.

Celtic Health Insurance Company of PA

Based out of Chicago, IL Celtic is a well established insurance company that has been given a financial rating of A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best. Besides the basic HMO and PPO plans, Celtic offers an “Any Doc” PPO plan in PA where you pay $35 for any office visit, regardless of network. Other options include health savings accounts and short term insurance.

Fairmont Specialty Group of PA

Dually headquartered in Rockford, IL (administration) and Tampa, FL (marketing), Fairmont offers many different options for the Pennsylvania resident. Options include, Medical Excess Reinsurance, Blanket Special Risk, Organ Transplant, Provider Excess of Loss and Employer Stop Loss with access to term life. A.M. Best, a rater of insurance companies financial security, has given the Fairmont Specialty Group a financial rating of B++ (very good).

Golden Rule Health Insurance Company of PA

Given a financial rating of A and A+ from A.M Best and Standard and Poors the Golden Rule insurance company has three flexible health care plans: a health savings account, a high deductible plan, and co-pay plans. In addition to these three flexible plans there are short term plans and Medicare supplemental insurance. Golden Rule is a very strong company that is a part of the United Health Group of companies and as such participates in the very large United Healthcare nationwide network.

Highmark Inc. – Independence Blue Cross of PA

On March 28, 2007 Highmark Inc. and Independence Blue Cross combined to offer health insurance coverage to residents of Pennsylvania. The new company will maintain offices in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and will seek to bring comprehensive and affordable health care solutions to Pennsylvania.
